Bailey, A Deaf Child with Autism Scotland

For a deaf child with autism, Bailey Muir is the unqiue child in Scotland. There is very rarely in the documentary world where never discuss about deaf and hard of hearing community. Nobody knows about Deaf culture and language as a world like we are all same humans daily. Muir family is his a third deaf generation family due to his father Barry Muir, uncle and grandparents are deaf as well. His father shared his experience and journey with a deaf child and autism. Therefore, Bailey is the first autism identity in the whole family. It has been through a lot to learn about Bailey’s struggle and journey the identity.

Sincerely, autism and deaf identity are a double workings to focus as a child because it’s mixing the communication method in a British Sign Language and academic education make him a worse confusion. A British Sign Language is the first language of all deaf family who speaks in the language that gives more benefits in the communication. Through, this deaf child has autism which is more complicated and extra stubborn in the lifestyle where he can be a lot of energy (hyper and high actives). But, there is a lot of patient by his family to support his needs daily. For the years, Barry finds a solution to give Bailey’s lifestyle to fit in a calm down and find the subjects that he likes to do in the activities. It is very important to be aware of the world about this deaf child with an autism identity.

Family Butcher

Group Statement: Ellana, Ellen, Julia, Kashif, Celine and Maia

For our photo-film, we decided to shoot at The Family Butcher in Bruntsfield. This location was suggested to us by one of our team member’s interpreters, Jodi. This location was perfect as the owners of the establishment were very friendly and open to answer any of our questions, they also allowed us to access all areas of the butchers to get photographs.

Kashif, Celine and Maia were the photographers, Julia and Ellana were the interviewers and Ellen was in charge of the audio. We all really enjoyed working in our team and feel we all worked very well together to create a successful photo-film. Some issues we discovered all occurred during the post production; our audio was quite hard to clean up as there were different voices that kept interrupting some of the recordings, our images were quite difficult to edit as they came out extremely pink due to the lighting in the shop and it was quite tedious getting all the images timed perfectly to the audio. We managed to resolve all these issues, however, and are very proud of our final film.

Overall, we are very happy with the finished project. We feel that the photo-film really gives the viewer a sense of who the person being interviewed is. The film also gives the audience a sense of the space due to our access in the shop. The audio we obtained from the interview is in depth and personal, as the interviewee discusses his family and the history of his butcher’s shop. This makes the film more interesting and engaging. The only thing we feel we could improve on is clearing up the final audio to make it sound a little crisper and more professional.

CLIMATE CHANGE - mARCH 2019

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

a Barrier of Light spOTS

A communication and accessibility barriers are most important for people’s lives as deaf and hard of hearing individuals where causes frustration with the social system. The images show the value keys of a light spot in all pictures. That shows the key light spot to recognize the problem area. For a purpose, they prove to show struggles and risks their life every day.

In most experiences, the deaf and hard of hearing community often mentioned the struggles of life and trouble that we can’t HEAR you every detail. For general people who often speak to deaf and hard of hearing because they thought deaf and hard of hearing people can hear very well also lip-reading not 100%. The fact of the answer is NOT always perfect for them. In a situation, deaf and hard of hearing are frustrated that workers always excuse that unable to provide the accessibilities service for the community. Unfortunately, they decided to ignore their request and continue to process what they do their job.

Again, they continue more problems the accessibilities service and the miscommunication with deaf and hard of hearing people. For the society system, pictures share through one to four that important to show what is the issue area to notice a barrier communication related to barrier communication, rejected, speaking, and telephone accessibilities.

In The mind of SELF-PORTRAIT

My childhood is the most nothing to able an understanding of the personal life. That is very important to sharing the stories of the personal life who experienced through the difficult life. Again, few people who have many awful the experience in their life apply to the real world. For three pictures, they’re involving the personal experiences that I able to change a better person to be identity myself.

First to third images, In 1999-2007, I grew up at Deaf Institute School (E.C.Drury School for the Deaf) in Milton, Ontario in Canada. I had many happened to impact me. I’m the one student who unable to get some help that I’ve through bullied, pained, suffered, and voice abused by most students. Also, I often left out that I have a cochlear implant too. That affected students walk away from me because, they thinks that I become a hearing world as the identity likely normal people does have an ability to speaking and hears. After that, everything turned me into the dark place and I was been an isolate and lonely for few years. That made me to become a confused identity who I am right now like I’m passive and keep in the quiet to not sharing my feeling and expression.

Once, I have big thinking in the future after 2007 of the year that I changed everything happens to me transfer to new mainstream High School (Dante Alighieri Catholic Academy) and went to Rochester Institute of Technology University (RIT). In the final, I know where I am really who I am and completely proud of myself to be truly person. That is the strongly affecting to become a speak-up, making the decision, the identity of a journey, and super proud to be deaf identity as well.
